I am just returning home from a long week in NJ. My lovely mother passed away the day after Christmas. It was expected, she had been sick for a long 16 years and this past year was extremely difficult for her. What was not expected was the discovery of lost memories.
Let me start by saying that after my mothers first craniotomy in 1995, a 9 hour surgery to remove a tumor the size of a man's fist, she had a long 3 year recovery, many hurdles to over come and because of the size of this tumor it was difficult to extract it without damaging some of her brain tissue. She was a different mom. The mom I grew up with was gone and I was sad. Don't get me wrong I was so thankful that she was still with us, my children got to know their grandmother, I just had not expected a whole new person. With a heavy heart I grieved the loss of my mom. Over the next 16 years she would under go 8 more craniotomy's and radiation treatments to keep the benign tumors at bay. Each time a little more of her would slip away. She would work hard to recover and soldier on...always with a smile. In 16 years I never heard my mom complain, seriously never once. I was so proud of her, awed by her strength and courage...her desire to fight so hard to stay here with us. The last 2 surgeries left her paralyzed on her right side and unable to speak more then 3 words. We expected the "slowing of her brain", but expecting it and watching it were 2 different things. It was heart breaking for all who knew my mother pre tumors and frustrating to her. I had the gift of being able to sit with her for 5 days about a week before her death. I was there when she opened her eyes for the first time in 2 days, and when she saw me we sobbed. I was there when the doctor said there was nothing more to do. I was there when the decision was made not to feed the tumors any more. I was there when she tried to sing one of her favorite Harry Chapin songs. I was there when she opened her eyes for one of the last times and for this I will be forever grateful. I returned home for Christmas with my family and on our way back down early on the morning of the 26th, my Saint of a brother Peter called me to let me know that she had died early that morning. That call was followed by another from my other brother Chris, telling me the same.
We turned our car around in Massachusetts, headed back to Maine to gather my husband then headed back down to NJ. Where at my mothers wake I was given the gift of memories, beautiful memories of my mom. Friends from the neighborhood where I grew up, friends from High School, College, Maine, from my mother's childhood, from her 26 years with my dad ( who pre-deceased her by 27 years) My aunts and uncles and cousins from far and near... came in force and shared stories about "Joan" and "Mrs. Delsandro" & "Aunt Joanie" Stories about how she welcomed them into our family, how they lived at our house, her contagious giggle, sweet smile, kind spirit, giving soul and on and on. I was so thankful for all the sharing of memories, because in all honesty, these past 16 years somewhere I had put all those memories away. I was touched deeply and more than words can ever describe by all the love I have felt the past week. From people who are a part of who I am...they are forever woven into the fiber of my being. I am blessed to have been born into such a family who raised me to be the person I am. They taught us love and kindness, to treat others they way you wish to be treated...who knew such simple words really go a long, long way. Because at the end of the day...my mother treated everyone kindly and with love and she was sent off that way a thousand fold.

It has been a while since I have posted anything...I need to be better at that. I have been busy working on new things for the holiday show season...skirts in warm wooly fabrics, cotton jersey applique, warm wraps in wool , jersey & thermal, sweaters, cards, advent calendars, tiny wool art, ornaments and the like. Here are some of the new pieces I have been working on...all in progress, hopefully done by end of next week!

I sketch, draw design, sew every day... I have been in the studio 24/7 the past few weeks...with breaks for sporting events and a side trip to Ikea! I need to work out a better schedule, all work and no play makes me feel like I need to play all the more! So I am trying to balance that piece better. We were given a wonderful gift this year at Christmas from our dear friends Beth & Steve....Cookies of the month! Our first month the cookies arrived in a lovely cookie jar. Every month Beth or Steve stop by with new yummier cookies than the previous month and fill up our cookie jar. The cookies last no longer than a day or two (teenage boy, need I say more). Here is a look at last months cookies. So pretty!

This is the new Public art piece made by the students at Brown Elementary school in South Portland

Each child drew a forest animal, bug, bird, or tree

Signed their name to a ribbon

and placed an image into the collage (birds are the tree)

All the work was done by the children (Forest animals the earth)

with a little assistance from me. (and a butterfly sky)

Appletree School Poster

If it's Springtime, it's time for my annual residency at Appletree School. I LOVE this school. My two children went there, and I was a bit melancholy on my son's last day. It is a fabulous place for natural learners and I am so happy they both had the experience. I believe they are lovers of book, and learning today because of Appletree School.

I am also so happy that I am asked back year after year to do a block printing project with Appletree children. The children's enthusiasm is contagious, they are adorable, funny and fantastic creators! Remember these names...they are artists, writers, creative & intellectual minds of the future and I am pleased to be able to work with them. Here is the work of the class of 2011: Their originals, and blocks I made using their drawings as inspiration...Enjoy!

Spring and winter are 2 of my favorite seasons, not for obvious reasons, but because it's art card time. My husband and I run a small business called PureArtCards. We provide artcard fundraisers for schools, creating cards, prints, pendants and the like from the children's artwork and the schools receive the lions share as we offer a 60% of total sales to the school. Every year I look forward to the fantastic work that comes across my desk. As usual I was not disappointed. Here is a little look at some of the work from various spring schools 2011, from Maine to New Mexico...lovely.

I have been playing w/jersey scraps lately,really just winging it! I have been wanting to make a rag rug for a while now and although I'm not in love with this one, I see potential, with a little color planning and prep. I just cannot throw the scraps away. I think I drive my husband a little nuts. I have made chairs, pot holders and now rugs...I am waiting for the giant pot holder loom that Ted is making, to make the perfect GIANT rug. I know I will LOVE it, as I am totally in love with the primitive potholder look.

After a long few days, I was happy to get home and do some work on my design for the repeat pattern class I am taking. I have not worked much in gouache, but gotta say I'm kinda loving it.

Repeat pattern process has been a mystery to me. I have been trying to figure out on my own, with success, but I continually think there must be an easier way. So this is one way. I am digging the banana colors, need to finish the leaves, then I will copy, scan and manipulate it in Photoshop.... we'll see.

Lovely really...

My dear friend Julie was here for the Holiday's with her niece Abby, and made this beautiful thing. I am always impressed with flower arranging ability, as that talent eludes me. Also impressed that it is still alive...she made this Dec. 23 and we are still enjoying the loveliness.

Looking back, 2010 was a year full of joy and surprises, disappointments, grief and uncertainty. Change in visions, both personally and in business. The Joy and Surprise most definitely out weighed the sorrow and loss. I think that without joy and happiness, grief and sorrow would be so unbearable. Large doses of love and happy and those that bring it, help make loss and sorrow bearable. The losses have been heartbreaking. I have mourned for friends and loved ones who are gone, my heart feels their absence daily. I am forever hopeful for those who are still here, but their minds or bodies have betrayed them. I am grateful for relationships that have run the course. I believe people come in and out of your life with purpose. I embrace the experiences and lessons that came from those relationships.
Some of the changes have been unplanned, but change is good. Sometimes something unplanned sheds light on the big picture. I am a lemonade maker, you know, a glass half full gal, always have been...just the way I'm built...it has served me well.

I believe we are the source of our own happiness. Regardless of external influences, it is our decision to choose to be happy or unhappy. 2010 was a very happy year!

I am blessed to have an amazing, supportive, understanding husband, 2 fantastic, great, talented, smart and beautiful children, a home filled with laughter, a fighting strong mother, wonderful brothers, sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews who I love madly. I am truly so lucky to have so many dear friends, both old and new. Welcome 2011, I will be sure to look for the lesson. I will let in and then let go of anger and hurt feelings and I will continue to choose Happy everyday! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Since they were wee ones my children have have made ornaments for our tree. Now 16 & 13 they still enjoy, so much that our tree only has hand made ornaments on it (with the exception on my Nana's glass garland). Mostly made by my children, but a special few have made it to the tree that have been made for us by friends. What are your favorite ornaments?

I will be heading to Blue Hill for the Bay School Winter Faire this weekend. I am looking forward to a lovely show in a lovely little corner of Maine. My 16 year old daughter will be making the trip with me again this year What a treat, I get to hang out with my daughter! As she gets older and becomes more independent,(working,driving,sports,friends), I look forward to times spent alone. I truly cherish time spent without distractions of every day. Since she was a babe, Eliza has always been a joyful companion.

I planted this shrub about 3 years ago when we finished building our home. Every year my husband says "we should pull this, it's dead". Every year I say no, and every year these fabulously, beautiful purple berries show up, pretty glorious I think. I have no idea what this is called, but Ii am in LOVE with it.

Never at a loss for things to do in the fall. Last weeks Common Ground Fair was a treat. Saturday's weather was summer like, after a chilly Friday. So much to see, but I managed to see lots!

This weekend had me at the designing women show in Kennebunk. It was a lovely show with so many fantastic women with much talent. Lisa & Paula did an outstanding job, and all the customers seemed to be happy and in the Holiday shopping zone. I unfortunately am not that organized in my holiday shopping...I am pretty much a mid December shopper.

I just returned home from 3 days at the Neighborhood invitational Craft show in Northeast Harbor. It was a fantastic show with some amazing talent, it was a beautiful show. Thanks Linda & Jodie for having me!
We happened to squeeze in some family time too! Ted & the kiddos were in Bar Harbor while I worked. They had a blast and I joined them in the evening for walks and yummy dinners. It was lovely!

It is the Monday after the Yarmouth Clam Festival. It was a sun filled show. After a busy weekend it was nice to be up at Peg's Pond House, our cottage on Barter's Island. Our lovely little cottage is in the process of some major renovation (not by choice, but by necessity) Ted & T-Moe were out in the yard doing some serious digging with Big Diggie, I had no idea one had to dig so far down to reach the footings. I was inside emptying rooms for demolition...makes me so sad. When we bought this cottage 8 years ago Ted & I had dreams of retiring here...it's still the plan, however it now seems like it will be a totally different house. The 60 year old home seems to have been built without a perimeter drain. For years our sump pumps have been keeping up, however they can no longer keep up and some serious water damage occurred over the past year. Sooooooooo onward to a new improved Peg's Pond House. I will post photos soon...I forgot camera today! The pic above is of "Casey" also know as "Big Diggie" and " The Other Woman" on her way from South Portland to Barter's Island.

Some new patterns

Been playing lots with pattern & repeats. I had some fabric made recently at Spoonflower. Will be great for for skirts & covering the cushions of some chairs that I have been weaving.
Spoonflower has a weekly fabric contest. I try to enter them, as it sometimes makes me draw something I might not ordinarily do. I encourage you to take a look at this weeks contest entries and vote for your favorite...some lovely prints. Why not enter one yourself...I'd love to see!

Sketch Books

I take them everywhere with me. When I see something that catches my eye, I make a quick sketch and then use it as reference for a more detailed version or I simplify for block printing. Often times I like the quick sketch best. I sketch EVERYTHING! chairs, cars, flowers, cups, kitchen utensils, appliances, faces, plants, trees, animals, bugs...and the list goes on. I sketch at the beach, waiting in airports, Dr.'s offices, for my kiddos after practice, school etc. I always have one in my car, just in case. I am very primitive in my technique, my older brother was the excellent artist in our family. I have years & years worth of books...I still use many of the sketches I rework, recolor, add to new imagery to the old. I have sketch books from high school & college days, my early 20's, I cannot part with them. Some I HATE, some I really don't recall what I was thinking, but when I look at them it's like visual journal of my past & present.
So here is a little look at the past few months and how It works for me.

New life to old chairs

I have been on a journey lately to reuse, recycle, repurpose, buy local, eat clean & grow what we can. My husband & I are both self employed, Ted is a carpenter/alternative energy consultant and I work with fiber and mixed media. We both have lots of scrap in our studio/workshops and I am always looking to do something with all that is leftover. As I posted earlier, a friend showed me her weaving method for repurposing ties, my intent was to use my scrap jersey for weaving seats & backs and was so thrilled with the outcome. I am now in the process of finishing a couple of these old rush rockers and six of these old cane chairs. I am certain I will not have room for them all, so I may be selling a few of these at some local shows here in Maine.

Strawberry Festival

Saturday, June 26 is the 2nd annual Cape Farm Alliance Strawberry Festival. This free festival is a great place to spend the day with your family while supporting local Farms, Farmers, Restaurants, Artists & Craftsmen. You can pick your own strawberries, listen to great music and your children can create something fabulous at the Kids tent. The day will finish with a pot luck dinner and silent auction to support the Cape Elizabeth Farm Alliance. This is the second year of this event and last year was a great little Festival. Bring the family and support your local business folks while enjoying some down home fun!

I cannot believe all the babies are graduating

This year so many of my friends "babies" are graduating. I cannot believe how time has flown by. Claire, Henry & Jack are all heading to collages in New England. It seems like not so long ago we were passing Jack around at parties because he was the chubbiest baby EVER and your arms would ache if you held him too long! Henry was the funniest non crawler...he kinda did a little bottom hitching thing that I never saw before. And Claire was the most kind toddler to my then newborn, so sweet and loving. I am so proud of all 3 of these kiddos. All have done great things in their High School years, I cannot wait to see what they do in the years to come. Congratulations and Much Love & Happiness!

A Fabulous School Poster

I had the extreme pleasure of doing an artist in residence at a wonderful little school in Cape Elizabeth a while back. At this school (Pre, K & 1) I take drawings that the children do on a selected theme and use those drawings as inspiration, I make them into blocks for the children.

I love the simplicity and detail

I spend a morning with them printing on paper & fabric. It is such fun...the kiddos are such a joy to be with. The theme this year was "birds" . As you can see from the originals & block prints, they were fabulous. Just recently made a poster for them...so delightful!

A few years ago I took a class from my friend Diane who teaches how to make these lovely chairs from neckties. I had a ton of scrap jersey in the studio and knew this would be the perfect way to use it. I finally finished the chair frame and started weaving.

I like...looks like a giant potholder...very pleasing.

Hunt & Roast

As I was filling eggs last night I was assuming this would be the last year my children humored me with the traditional egg hunt. Gone was the early am wake up & run to the baskets. More like 9:00 for my daughter & 11:00 for my son & our exchange student. Once they were up and fed, they headed out for the hunt, followed by a silly string fight and then the traditional roasting of the peeps. Lots of laughs, spent with family & friends, yummy food and fun. Happy Easter!

On Saturday we picked up Juan Jose from the airport. He will be visiting with us for the next 4 weeks. He arrived from Chile, with 20 of his friends for a 4 week exchange program. They are dispersed along the coast of Maine and are all very fresh faced and excited to be here. If you are entertaining the thought of being a host family, I encourage you to do so. The bonds made, from what I can tell so far are long lasting. This is our second year, and the experience for both our visiting child and my family has been quite a wonderful one. My daughter will be visiting Chile in the summer, to spend time with Cami, our Chilean daughter who with us last year. I am just hoping the next 4 weeks do not zoom by as they did last year.

Any one who knows me well, knows I have had a long time love affair with burlap. Curtains, chair covers, book covers, you name it. I have all these great blocks that I've made and use for my clothing & artwork. I thought they would be perfect for some pillows & table runners. I just finished a prototype of a pillow and I'm kinda loving it, it is burlap after all. I do think it needs a wee bit more stuffing however. I am heading back to the table to make more!

I received this Wacom tablet for Christmas in 2008 and I am just now getting in some play time. It is a fun, easy to use tool and I am kicking myself for not getting it out of the box sooner! So this is my very first drawing on it and I am excited for the possibilities.

If you are wondering how you might be able to help the people of Haiti, check out the Craft Hope for Haiti etsy store I have a few of my prints for sale there and 100% of the profits are going directly to Doctors Without Borders. This wonderful project is run by some very selfless women who have been working tirelessly around the clock to get all the donations listed. I am consistently amazed by the generosity of the art & craft community. As of 1/20/10 over $20,000.00 has been raised and over 1000 items sold...Amazing what a little art can do. Saturday evening I had the pleasure of seeing the documentary Handmade Nation by Faythe Levine. It was a treat. I am lucky to work in a community of independent minded artists & crafters who value handmade over mass produced, handcraft over convenience. I am fortunate to be able to express my creativity daily and eek out a reasonable living doing so. It gives me great joy to see others doing the same all over the nation! We are artists, crafters, self taught, art schooled, all with a voice of our own and an appreciation of each others work. It is a community like no other, supportive, creative, inventive and I am happy to be among so many talented folks.

What I think of 50

I Just had a birthday...a big number, I believe well past my halfway mark, as so nicely put by one of my younger brothers. Often at the mention of the age 50, the response is "You don't look 50" or more often "50 is the new 30". I am OK with being 50, evey year of it. 50 is not the new 30, it's 50! I think this is what 50 looks like. We are a new generation of 50. Each preceeding year has made me who I am at 50. Each trial & triumph, sorrow & joy, dissapointment & goal. I accept every line on my face, if a wrinkle is the price I pay for every laugh & smile then I am happy to have paid that price (even though many mornings I barly recognize my face in a mirror).Modern techniques make it possible to have these erased, but I would not, each line has a story behind it.

The path to 50 has not been straight and direct, there have been many forks in the path taken, with some serious bumps along the way. I have loved and have lost those that I have loved deeply. At the time the pain and sorrow unbearable. Amazingly, some how I made it through and still am able to love, knowing that loss will appear again. My heart has ached more than I ever dreamed bearable, but knowing that pain has not kept me from love.
I believe at 50 we become stronger, more compassionate, may be a little less physically able, more recovery time needed as evidenced after a long hike, bike or late night, but we still jump in, feet first.

At 50 I am truly comfortable speaking my truth. I don't try to please EVERYONE anymore. I don't so much care if I am liked by all. In 50 years I have met & become friends with a wide variety of people and I am truly blessed to have them in my life. I would consider anyone very lucky to be able to be in their company and it is my good fortune that they count me as their friend.They are amazing and from different stages in my life, but I hold them all near & dear and I am grateful.

At 50 can honestly say I am a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend. I have loads of experience.

At 50 I cannot say I have "found myself". I am still a work in progress. I hope to be true to my ideals and not offend others by doing so. I am more forgiving. I try to not hold a grudge. I have realized I will not like everyone and they me. I am ok with that. I have also realized I am not always right and for those who truly know me, you know it took me a long time to be able to say that. I feel 50 is the infant of old age, our journey just beginning. I cannot fight growing old, but growing up...NEVER! I choose to be the age in my heart. I am in amazing company, some of my favorite people have turned or are aproaching this mysterious number. So I ask... how old would you be if you did not know your age?

Happy 2010! A new year means a few new sketch books. I fill many a year. I am often asked about the process. I always start w/sketches. I draw all the time. I have a sketch book in my car, purse, briefcase, desk, bedroom. I am never without one. I take them on vacation, while I am in waiting rooms, train planes & automobiles. I sketch patterns, flowers, houses, landscapes, rain drops, shoes, lamps, mugs, sinks, people, animals. I sketch ideas for new clothing patterns, block prints, card ideas. I sometimes draw as a direct result of a phrase overheard, or a line in a song. A few years ago I challenged my self to a painting a day. It was great, the work...some good, others, well, not so good, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the process. So in 2010 I will try to share my sketch book daily...weekly. I will let you see whats cooking on the pages of my books.

For my Friend Sue's 50th Bday, I wanted to make her something special. So I start with an idea.

This is the nativity scene in our home. Years ago when my oldest (now 15) was 7, she was terribly upset at our lack of a beautiful nativity scene. She and her then 5 year old brother created this scene (until we save money for a "Pretty one" she explained) all by themselves. I cannot think of a better use for Barbie, Ken, Rescue Heros and playskool barn set. It is the most beautiful nativity scene ever (in my mind anyway).
Now at 15 & 12, they both still drag out the scene and set it up. At midnight the golf ball is removed from Mary's belly and baby Jesus is placed in the manger. Gone are the thoughts of purchasing a "Pretty one". It is one of our favorite parts of the Holiday season.

Open Studio Show& Sale

It's that time of year for my annual open studio show.
My fabulous 15 year old daughter & 12 year old guy cleaned the house for me while I was away working this weekend( they totally ROCK!) All I have left to do is rearrange the furniture and set up shop! I love this show. I get to hang out with 9 or so of my most favorite fellow artisans and socialize with friends & customers. Eat, Drink & Be Cheery! It does not get much better. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by.

It is the end of August and I must say I am NOT ready for my kids to head back to school. It has been a great, but short summer. Weather has just kicked in and I am not ready for a schedule! Oh well, I guess I still hold onto that childish dream of endless summer.

There is nothing as good as hanging out at the cottage on Barter's Island with good friends & family. I had the pleasure of hanging with the girls this weekend. Some of us have known each other since grammar school. Such a nice way to spend a lovely weekend. Hiking, sunning, eating, drinking and talking til the wee hours. LOVE you girlies!

It is the last day of school for my youngest and excitement fills the air this morning. His older sister has been out of school for a week & a half and he just cannot wait! Big summer plans full of sports, all day swimming, skim boarding and no school work. I like it. I am so proud of both kiddos, they did an outstanding job academically and have earned some serious PLAY time. So enjoy this beautiful day and let the summer games begin!

Just back from NYC. Love the vibe there. Visited the Surtex show at the Javits Center. I walked the show, talked to some amazingly talented folks. Now I need to move in the direction to get ready for the show in 2010. Looks like many months of homework , but I am up for the challenge and looking forward to the new work possibilities. Need to get the portfolio in order and the long list of to do's!

I Love the spring!

After 2 years in our home the front yard is looking pretty good, although it is still in need of some TLC. The time for the backyard has finally come. We have a lovely volleyball court, and patio and the lawn is on the way. We had some brush chipped today,trees cut and loam next week. Looks like possibly a yard soon! Looking forward to it.

I love my Mom.
She is by far one of the bravest people I know. She has been battling recurring brain tumors for 13 years now. Major brain surgeries, radiation treatments, cyber knives, you name it, she has done it. It is a yearly occurrence for her. I honestly have never heard her complain, not once. She has never felt sorry for herself. Never uttered the words "Why me". She just pushes forward, doing what has to be done. She is forever optimistic and hopeful that this years tumor will be the last tumor. I love her, she knows that, but I need to make a point of letting her know how much I admire her strength. So Mom, I know you never thought you would hear me say it, but you are my hero, I can only hope to be like you! I Love You, Happy Mothers day.

So if you are out and about on Saturday, stop by the designing women show. I am giving out little Mom Wow cards for mother's day. Oh and they are free. Did I mention I really enjoy giving stuff away!

Beauty Everywhere

On a walk, in the garden, everywhere I look...beauty. I am so taken by springtime and all the lovliness. I feel I see more in the spring. I don't know if it is because it is sooooo cold in the winter months that I don't take the time to look closer, or just that I am caught up in the newness of spring

I love heart rocks, I have lots. I have been leaving them behind lately. Both my son & I are heart rock magnets. We find them everywhere, even when not looking. Lately I have been taking photos and leaving them for someone else to find.

Except for this little heart shell. I just could not resist!
